Florida: Dispute Over Abortion For Girl

The Florida social services agency was granted a court order to block an abortion for a 13-year-old girl living in a state shelter, prompting an emergency appeal by the American Civil Liberties Union. In its appeal, the A.C.L.U. argued that Florida statutes protected a minor's right to decide on an abortion. The girl had planned to have an abortion on Tuesday. But the State Department of Children and Families asked a Palm Beach County juvenile judge on Tuesday to block the procedure. The agency argued that the girl was too immature to make an informed medical decision, the A.C.L.U. appeal said. A judge granted a temporary injunction and ordered a psychological evaluation.
